The reporting around this has been so poor. What has actually happened is CCS won. Tesla's charging standard will die off.
North America will use Tesla's plug and the CCS charging protocol. CCS is the charging standard going forward and J3400 is the third plug type it supports.
Older Teslas won't be able to charge at non-Tesla chargers because they don't talk CCS. They can get a CCS retrofit to add CCS support.

Seems like best of both worlds. Much better connector interface and a non-proprietary charging protocol.
